The Book of Esther is read out in synagogues at the Feast of Purim. Yehia's silver filigree case for the traditional scroll of Esther imitates splendid Torah coverings, featuring domed and triple-tiered forms and decorations, midway between crown and Temple steps. The influence of Ze'ev Raban as designer is evident in the Oriental architectural framings of the scenes and in the concentrated fusion of picture-inscription-decoration. The reliefs portray scenes from the story within, depicting the story of the Biblical Book of Esther: set in the third year of Ahasuerus, the king of Persia, and telling the story of palace intrigue and of genocide thwarted by his Jewish Queen. |
